It always seems when you’re injured all you want to do is get out and exercise. When you’re not injured, you’re always ok with a few days off. Well now that I’m injured and not working out as much as I’d like to, I’ve decided I better start to get my act together and focus on my core and strength training to be injury free.

2011 marks the 4th year that The Nation’s Triathlon has offered the Military Challenge, which provides the opportunity for active duty and veteran service members to compete against each other. All challenge participants can compete as singles or teams, and will compete in their age group waves. The top challenge participants and teams will be recognized at the conclusion of the race in their own category. That first year, 200 competitors finished the race. Today, just four years later, we are proud to announce that over 600 active and veteran service members have signed up to compete in the 2011 Gryphon Technologies Military Challenge. Athletes from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Army Reserves, Coast Guard, Marines, and National Guard are all represented. Registration is open until Monday August 8th for the Military and First Responder Challenges so there is still time to get signed up. If you are interested in registering or would like to find out more information please contact Kristen at kristen@wseminc.com.

It's as easy as riding a bike, right? Not quite... As you're training for the Nations Triathlon, there's no doubt you have a head full of information focused on technique. From every moving body part of the proper swim stroke, to each deliberately calculated step of the run, the last thing you need to burden your triathlon brain with is cycling technique - after all, biking is just as easy as, well, riding a bike...right? Not quite... This blog provides tips on 5 components of proper body posture on the bike to help you improve efficiency, power, and avoid injury. Do you remember the first time you finally were able to balance, pedal, and move forward all at once on your first bicycle? If you do remember, it was no doubt a magical moment after weeks of frustrating crashes. Some children will never learn how to ride a bike or how to swim. Once these youth reach adulthood, it is very difficult to learn. Many children don’t learn due to a lack of resources, including not being able to afford a bike, lacking an adult in their lives able to teach them, and/or just having no interest since people around them do not use bicycles. This blog will discuss an innovative solution for this void, ACHIEVE Kids Tri, and how you can help support it by convincing friends or family to sign up for the Sold Out Nation’s Triathlon through an ACHIEVE Kids Tri charity slot.

I did my first triathlon in May of 2009 and did absolutely terrible. I had no idea what I was doing; I did the swim in my old college speedo even though the lake was 58 degrees, and my legs cramped up on the run because I went out way too hard on the bike. Yet I knew that I picked up a sport I wanted to excel at, I just needed a little help to get there. Not even a week after the race I signed up with The National Capital Area's Team in Training (TNT) Program to do The Nation’s Triathlon. I knew that TNT could help me with what I sorely lacked when it came to preparing for a race: knowledge and a support system.

Like most people in this sport, I came to triathlon strong in one discipline, swimming. Post college swimming, I was looking to add variety to my exercise regime and long story short, triathlon became my sport of choice. In the last few years, the main thing I have learned is that there is always more to learn: more racing tips, techniques, training advice, and how to improve my nutrition, strength & flexibility. Clinics and information sessions are some of the best ways I have found to learn and practice techniques I would normally never think of, nor take time to do. These clinics have given me critical info that makes a huge difference in my racing and, even more importantly, the training leading up to the race. For those living in Washington, DC, The Nation’s Triathlon is offering some great clinics for triathletes of all levels. The ALL NEW Tri Clinic Series, presented by Muscle Milk, is definitely something that will give me that extra knowledge and key tricks of the trade to help me succeed and improve my skills.

Many times I witness triathletes with their workout in hand unloading their workout bag in front of their respected lane ready to go. They lay out their written swim plan so carefully prepared for them by their tri coach or their freshly printed off cookie?cutter workout not really sure if the distance is even right for them.

In today’s economy some people find it difficult to enjoy the sport of triathlon because they know the cost involved. Let’s face it: triathlons can be expensive. The investment of tri gear, nutrition, educational materials and an endless array of other items can definitely add up. However, there are many ways to keep the costs down without breaking the bank.
