We strive to make our races athlete-friendly and are constantly looking for feedback and suggestions to improve and enhance the course and race experience. Why? At the finish line of the 2011 Nation’s Triathlon, one of the many gracious volunteers asked me “Are you okay?” I was bent at the hips, feeling dizzy and clammy. Standing still, but swaying a bit, stomach knotted, ears ringing. My right plantar fascia was seething, and both hands were planted firmly on my knees. I gazed down at blurry pavement, with a heart rate that of a squirrel. A frantic, out-of-shape squirrel. It’s hard to speak while gasping, so, having no choice, I said nothing. The volunteer patiently waited a bit and then asked me a second time. “Are you okay?” “Yes”, I grunted. Had I not been so short of breath, I would have said more...

Waiting for your age group wave to start is no fun, especially in the rain! In our 2010 post race survey many athletes asked us to find a way to reduce the wait times, especially for those that started in some of the final waves. We listened and decided to pilot a swim time trial start in 2011. So what does this mean? Here are a few of the most Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

2011 marks the 4th year that The Nation’s Triathlon has offered the Military Challenge, which provides the opportunity for active duty and veteran service members to compete against each other. All challenge participants can compete as singles or teams, and will compete in their age group waves. The top challenge participants and teams will be recognized at the conclusion of the race in their own category. That first year, 200 competitors finished the race. Today, just four years later, we are proud to announce that over 600 active and veteran service members have signed up to compete in the 2011 Gryphon Technologies Military Challenge. Athletes from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Army Reserves, Coast Guard, Marines, and National Guard are all represented. Registration is open until Monday August 8th for the Military and First Responder Challenges so there is still time to get signed up. If you are interested in registering or would like to find out more information please contact Kristen at kristen@wseminc.com.

Do you remember the first time you finally were able to balance, pedal, and move forward all at once on your first bicycle? If you do remember, it was no doubt a magical moment after weeks of frustrating crashes. Some children will never learn how to ride a bike or how to swim. Once these youth reach adulthood, it is very difficult to learn. Many children don’t learn due to a lack of resources, including not being able to afford a bike, lacking an adult in their lives able to teach them, and/or just having no interest since people around them do not use bicycles. This blog will discuss an innovative solution for this void, ACHIEVE Kids Tri, and how you can help support it by convincing friends or family to sign up for the Sold Out Nation’s Triathlon through an ACHIEVE Kids Tri charity slot.

I did my first triathlon in May of 2009 and did absolutely terrible. I had no idea what I was doing; I did the swim in my old college speedo even though the lake was 58 degrees, and my legs cramped up on the run because I went out way too hard on the bike. Yet I knew that I picked up a sport I wanted to excel at, I just needed a little help to get there. Not even a week after the race I signed up with The National Capital Area's Team in Training (TNT) Program to do The Nation’s Triathlon. I knew that TNT could help me with what I sorely lacked when it came to preparing for a race: knowledge and a support system.

In today’s economy some people find it difficult to enjoy the sport of triathlon because they know the cost involved. Let’s face it: triathlons can be expensive. The investment of tri gear, nutrition, educational materials and an endless array of other items can definitely add up. However, there are many ways to keep the costs down without breaking the bank.

The Debate: To Wetsuit or Not To Wetsuit.

Many triathletes are nervous about the swim portion of a triathlon, and many rely on their wetsuit to feel a sense of ease going into the first leg of the race. Here at The Nation’s Triathlon, we constantly get questioned about whether the race will be wetsuit legal. Last year it was a close call, and the day before the race gave us a comfortable feeling of wetsuit legal… thought not everyone wore theirs. The question still stands: Wetsuit or No Wetsuit? For this week’s blog, we’re getting the pro-wetsuit angle from DC Triathlete Sara Gimmy. Next swim blog we’ll look into the mind of a non-wetsuit-wearing triathlete.

Just under four years ago, I was 70lbs overweight, working 80 hours a week, and couldn't care less about athletics, but now I’m trying to write history by becoming the first Egyptian triathlete to qualify for and compete in the in the 2012 London Olympic games. Sound Impossible? It all started in 2007, when on a whim, a dare, and one too many "fat jokes," I entered my first triathlon - The Nation's Triathlon.
