At the finish line of the 2011 Nation’s Triathlon, one of the many gracious volunteers asked me “Are you okay?” I was bent at the hips, feeling dizzy and clammy. Standing still, but swaying a bit, stomach knotted, ears ringing. My right plantar fascia was seething, and both hands were planted firmly on my knees. I gazed down at blurry pavement, with a heart rate that of a squirrel. A frantic, out-of-shape squirrel. It’s hard to speak while gasping, so, having no choice, I said nothing. The volunteer patiently waited a bit and then asked me a second time. “Are you okay?” “Yes”, I grunted. Had I not been so short of breath, I would have said more...

It always seems when you’re injured all you want to do is get out and exercise. When you’re not injured, you’re always ok with a few days off. Well now that I’m injured and not working out as much as I’d like to, I’ve decided I better start to get my act together and focus on my core and strength training to be injury free.

2011 marks the 4th year that The Nation’s Triathlon has offered the Military Challenge, which provides the opportunity for active duty and veteran service members to compete against each other. All challenge participants can compete as singles or teams, and will compete in their age group waves. The top challenge participants and teams will be recognized at the conclusion of the race in their own category. That first year, 200 competitors finished the race. Today, just four years later, we are proud to announce that over 600 active and veteran service members have signed up to compete in the 2011 Gryphon Technologies Military Challenge. Athletes from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Army Reserves, Coast Guard, Marines, and National Guard are all represented. Registration is open until Monday August 8th for the Military and First Responder Challenges so there is still time to get signed up. If you are interested in registering or would like to find out more information please contact Kristen at kristen@wseminc.com.

It's as easy as riding a bike, right? Not quite... As you're training for the Nations Triathlon, there's no doubt you have a head full of information focused on technique. From every moving body part of the proper swim stroke, to each deliberately calculated step of the run, the last thing you need to burden your triathlon brain with is cycling technique - after all, biking is just as easy as, well, riding a bike...right? Not quite... This blog provides tips on 5 components of proper body posture on the bike to help you improve efficiency, power, and avoid injury. Some of these tips may seem second nature, some may never have entered your mind, but applying these principles during training is sure to make the middle portion of triathlon that much easier. *This is part 1 of 2 entries on cycling posture - next week's entry will focus on pedaling technique and cadence.

Do you remember the first time you finally were able to balance, pedal, and move forward all at once on your first bicycle? If you do remember, it was no doubt a magical moment after weeks of frustrating crashes. Some children will never learn how to ride a bike or how to swim. Once these youth reach adulthood, it is very difficult to learn. Many children don’t learn due to a lack of resources, including not being able to afford a bike, lacking an adult in their lives able to teach them, and/or just having no interest since people around them do not use bicycles. This blog will discuss an innovative solution for this void, ACHIEVE Kids Tri, and how you can help support it by convincing friends or family to sign up for the Sold Out Nation’s Triathlon through an ACHIEVE Kids Tri charity slot.

Technology for Training Part 2: Technology v Zen

Technology vs. Psychology. Garmin vs. Zen. Pace vs. Intensity. Do you know the differences? Technological advances help us monitor our progress and keep the training consistent, but to be reliant on them and/or to engage in too much data crunching often detracts from our ability to make real-time adjustments when it counts most. There is a difference between pace and intensity, with intensity being much more important for triathletes due to the myriad of factors that affect pace on the course. It's very possible that holding yourself to a given intensity will bring you to your predicted- or goal-pace (and vice versa), but always consider the race conditions and your body's real-time status first. Race based on feel. GPS watches, power meters, and heart rate monitors will not always guide you when you want to actually race someone, or when you're attempting to judge if your speed is too fast or slow at the moment. You need to know your limits and what you're capable of achieving based on how your body feels and which body parts are speaking to you. For instance, a GPS watch should not be telling you how fast to run during the middle of a race, it should merely be satisfying your curiosity.

The Debate: To Wetsuit or Not To Wetsuit.

Many triathletes are nervous about the swim portion of a triathlon, and many rely on their wetsuit to feel a sense of ease going into the first leg of the race. Here at The Nation’s Triathlon, we constantly get questioned about whether the race will be wetsuit legal. Last year it was a close call, and the day before the race gave us a comfortable feeling of wetsuit legal… thought not everyone wore theirs. The question still stands: Wetsuit or No Wetsuit? For this week’s blog, we’re getting the pro-wetsuit angle from DC Triathlete Sara Gimmy. Next swim blog we’ll look into the mind of a non-wetsuit-wearing triathlete.
